Product Description

This group of assignments in the series called Writing Strands is designed to give homeschooled third level students a grounding in the very complicated process of giving others their thoughts in written form. This level is designed for students who, in public school, would be considered ready for third or even up to seventh grade. Of course, third and seventh grade students would write much differently, but that is not a problem. Both can experience learning the skills presented in this level. It has been designed to be widely applied, for there are many experiences here that most young writers should have. Scope & Sequence: Topics covered in this level are following directions (basic), sentence & paragraph control (basic), rewriting sentences (basic), description (people), description (people's thoughts), organization (activities), organization (objects), description (perspective), story creation (creative), description (organization), description (actions), narrative events (organization), creative (narrative). (Grades 3 to 7.)

Writing Strands Level 2 lays the groundwork for this book. I love this series for both the child who loves writing and the child who struggles to put a complete sentence together. I currently have 4 children working in 3 different levels, according to their ability. The beauty of this series is that you are able to focus on building specific writing skills, and the progress, especially for the non-writer, is amazing if you will be patient and take your time. I love the variety of writing genres addressed, and I make adjustments to assignments as needed to fit each child's abilities. I also recommend Dave Marks' "Evaluating Writing" to help you evaluate your child's work (imagine that).

I agree with the first review that it can be confusing. However, stick with it and work with your children. I did, and by lesson three my daughter really got the hang of it and is doing quite well. I now have to give minimal direction and I have seen improvement in her thought process on writing. (that was on lesson five). We are almost finished and I can honestly say Writing Strands. I do have to say that this works well only if children have a love of writing. If that is not their interest, I would select another program.

writing Strands brought our daughter to tears. It is difficult to understand and even I as an adult had a hard time with it. Very confusing.
