Asian students have consistently scored higher than American students on international math testing. Why? Their teachers use a method that introduces concepts in a different order than U.S. schools. They emphasize building thinking skills rather than leaning heavily on rote-memorization. Reading the introduction to Singapore Math, I found that the goal of the course is to guide your student to become a problem-solver, even in unfamiliar territory, and understand the why behind each newly mastered concept.

Singapore Math has created a homeschool version for American students. The easy-to-follow Home Instructor’s Guide introduces new concepts (from the Textbook) and provides activities for necessary reinforcement, using simple manipulatives and games. The Textbook is a springboard for meaningful discussion between teacher and student. This discussion is basic to the course. (This is a true parent-directed curriculum. It does not rely on a pile of work sheets or hours spent in front of a monitor with a “bells and whistles”-laden computer program.) Once a concept is grasped, the student can move on to the exercises in the Workbook. These workbooks offer children a sense of accomplishment before moving to the next level: “Wow, look at the problems you mastered!” Everything is explained in a step-by-step manner with a no-rush go-at-your-own pace approach, but a weekly “suggested” schedule with objectives is offered.

Singapore Math offers a free online placement test. Since the course is so reasonably priced, you can try it without a hefty financial commitment to see if it works with your learner.

Singapore Math will help you and your children face the often daunting world of “numbers” together and come out winners!

I recently begin to use singapore 3a with my 2 boys: 1 just finish 3rd grade and the other finished 2nd. I did not find that is being any chalenge to them, so far. It does not use some wording that they are familiar, and the book does not use comma to separate place values which confused one of my boys in the beggining. The book is easy to use. I purchase the intense workbook instead of the regular one. I find it a great extra practice and chalenging word problems. I do also use A Beka which is repetive and a little time consuming to follow, however, I like the review, and if I don't need it I just skip it.

Excellent resource. We would give all the Singapore Math books 5 stars! The books are visually clear and easy to understand. I recommend taking the placement test to make accurate book selection. We did and ended up starting in a lower book that I thought we would, but quickly gained speed. Now our child is faster than a calculator and loves math!

For the last 3 years I have tried different curriculums and have had to fight with my son over his math work. Now he asks to do extra! We love Singapore math because there is not any "busy work". You learn the lesson, do your practice pages and then apply it in your workbook. There also are a lot of word problems in this book, which my son loves because then it seems like there is a reaon for his math, not just repetitive drills. I love the word problems because it helps him see how the concept applies in real life.

We have used Singapore math books for home school for 2 years and we love them! They are clear and comprehensive. They offer lots of review without too much drill.
