8 of 11 Reviews Showing:(View All Reviews) Reviewed by Tammy Hammond (Moss Point, MS), August 15, 2010I think saxon is the best math program offered today. I am a certified teacher and a big fan of the Saxon method. Reviewed by Allyson Pike (Kodiak, AK), February 20, 2010I personally love this curriculum. The lessons are easy to understand and build on each other. There is plenty of review without going overboard. I can see my daughter getting faster when she does "facts practice" and she seems well prepared when she takes her state test every year. Reviewed by Renata Wiertek (Tempe, AZ), November 15, 2009Easy to follow, well orginized However, I found practice tests and exercises too easy for this level. I compared this book with my doughter's school math book and it looks like we are doing 4th grade at home..... Reviewed by Christina Morris (Grand Blanc, MI), October 06, 2009This curriculum is really great! I was so very afraid to homeschool this year for 2 major reasons...#1 I can not stand math!...#2 I was jumping into "big kid" math!. This is my very first year ever homeschooling and I didn't know what to do or what to get. I was lost! I stumbled upon Saxon math...or I really should say that God directed us to Saxon math, and I am so glad! My daughter is doing wonderfully and I am not even a tad bit stressed out at all! I am actually learning right along side of her! I also LOVE the solutions manual, we call it the "sneaky teacher"...AWESOME CURRICULUM!!! Reviewed by Cleo Haygood (Fayetteville, GA), September 01, 2009My son has used Saxon Maath before & he likes it. I like that you can purchase everything you need in this kit. I also like the fact that Saxon does a lot of review of previously learned concepts. Reviewed by Rachel Pate (Suwanee, GA), July 27, 2009This is a great product for review the basics each day! It teaches one new concept a day, but reviews each old concept as well. This keeps their learning fresh in their minds.I love that about Saxon. Reviewed by Darcie (Albuquerque, NM), June 18, 2009This course has three parts: daily lessons, tests, and investigations. The daily lessons start with the equivalent of mad minutes. You decide how long your child has up to 5 min.. Following this is mental math. This a great addition; on average it takes around 5-10 min. Next is the actual math lesson. The text at the beginning of each lesson is grade appropriate and your child could read this and proceed to the lesson practice on their own, though probably not the best way to go about this. Lesson practice is a series of 5-20 or so problems, depending on the lesson. These problems are specific review for the material that you just covered. Completing everything through the lesson practice should take about 45 min. The final part is the mixed review, this is usually 29 problems and is a very comprehensive review taking around 30-45 min to complete. Some lessons also have additional practice in the back of the book. We do everything through the lesson practice in the morning and the mixed in the afternoon. Beginning with lesson 10 there is a test after every 5 lessons. After every 10 lessons is an investigation. They take about 30 minutes to complete and cover a variety of things from fractions to problem solving methods. I can’t recommend this strongly enough, it is everything a math curriculum should be, including flexible. In the past I have read reviews that stated that this was below grade level, I don’t find that to be correct. Math 6/5 is about right for the 5th grade. Taking these books in order by the end of 8th grade your child will be ready to start Algebra, which is where they are supposed to be. More importantly they will have a good grasp on everything covered. Reviewed by Cherie (Crystal Lake, IL), May 28, 2009All three of my children have successfully used Saxon Math after switching from other programs in the first years of home schooling, starting with book 5/4 through currently using Algebra I. The lessons are easy to follow with a consistent format, and taught directly to the student for independent work. Each concept has a chapter reference, so the student can refer back as needed. While Saxon strongly advises not altering lessons and the amount of practice problems to successfully complete the program, my children were overwhelmed with the amount of work given for each lesson, so I adjusted to each of my children’s ability and progress by only giving half of the mixed practice problems, splitting the lessons over two days or, if the child was buzzing along, doubling lessons then full mixed practice and lesson on alternate days. Testing is done on Fridays. If switching to this program after using others, be sure to take the placement tests offered on the Saxon website, and not go by grade level, to ensure there are no learning gaps to successfully use this program.
