They like that they can create thier own problems to solve and have fun with math! Reviewed by Laura Padberg (Oklahoma City, OK), January 24, 2009We absolutely love this book. My son loves the rods that you use with it. It really makes you think, and I know it will be good for him the whole way through. He thinks it is a "fun" book and so does a friend of his. I highly recommend it! Reviewed by Jennifer Moffat (Brighton, MI), September 08, 2008Miquon materials are excellent. My K can use this book without much help. Their activities build number sense and mental math. The teachers guide-lab annotations- is helpful for some of the unique ways that they present materials, for example the clock lessons are taught without numbers at first, using the fractions of half past and quarter to and after. Reviewed by Anna (Iowa), September 28, 2007A great math program that helps to develop mathematical thinking. Make sure you have Cuisenaire Rods, as they are needed for your child to do this curriculum. My daughter enjoys this program. Reviewed by Linda Schubert (Westerville, OH), August 30, 2007It is very helpful to visually teach the child the numbers to remember and do the equations etc. with this book. To be able to get them visually in their long term memory. I was told by a friend who Home Schooled her children for some time that the kids who are right brained and artistic have a more difficult time in schools since that is more how the schools teach. Even with my daughter going to school I know it will help her get better with her math. She will not feel like she is doing home work. The Teachers Helper is NEEDED to go with this book. Reviewed by Roxane Stancil (Carthage, NC), August 14, 2007I taught both of my children with this series. It is excellent and easy to use, the price is right, and it is very thorough. It teaches them the thought process behind the math not just the mechanics, making them have extremely high math test scores when compared to other students their age!! This is a great series for homeschoolers!!!!!! Reviewed by Sherry (Hillsdale, WY), August 12, 2007I have used this book and other Miquon workbooks with four of my six children so far. I love the confidence my children have developed in math using these books. Currently I have a six year old daughter and a seven year old son, both using the orange book. My six year old figured out the value of each color rod by the end of the first week. The work is challenging for her without being too strenuous. My seven year old autistic son is making great strides in the orange book. It took a great deal of practice for him to grasp the concept of written numerals before he was ready for Miquon. We first tried using the workbooks when he was six, but he clearly was not ready, so we did Saxon K and other supplementals for a year first. Now he will usually do two or three Miquon workbook pages in a day. These books work great for both NT children (neurologically typical)and those who have an autism spectrum disorder, like my son. Be sure to have plenty of hands on manipulatives for Miquon math; Cuisanaire rods, 2-colored counters, etc. We love Miquon math and I plan on using it with my twins when they are ready. Reviewed by Helen Feinsod (Snyder, TX), March 10, 2005This is excellent material. I used this with the cuisenaire rods for my home-schooled 1st grade grandaughter. She developed such an understanding of addition, subtraction, multiplication . . . this method leads to real understanding . . . hence, a love of numbers!
