Encourage good writing while instilling lessons of American history! Easily adaptable to different grades/levels, this course may be used in group or individual settings, and includes notes for grading, materials needed and reproducible checklists. Based on the principles elaborated upon in Teaching Writing: Structure and Style, it is recommended that the teacher be at least familiar with Teaching Writing before using US History-Based Writing Lessons. Lessons follow the included scope & sequence, with scripted-teacher notes, examples, and instructions. Copies of the student pages are included as well. The book If You Lived in Colonial Times will be necessary to complete this course.

This is our second year using Excellence in Writing. I find the material to be of good quality full of good information. However, one thing that my husband and I did have issue with is, the fact that after purchasing the materials (which are labeled as a set), we then had to print out almost 100 pages of additional materials. We feel as though this material should have been included, (as is stated in the description of the kit). We found this a bit unnerving. If you say something is included then it should be, other wise update the description. Excellence in Writing has top-notch products but, you should not cut corners but instead include ALL required material in the sets. Especially since it says these materials are included in the kit.

We used this text without having ever seen the Teaching Writing materials and it was not a problem. For the first time ever, my kids were excited about writing. They also learned more about history from this writing program than they did from their history textbook. There are very few materials that I recommend without hesitation, but this is top-notch.
