I had ordered the "Prairie Primer" planning to use it for our unit study. However upon receiving the "Prairie Primer" I was dismayed. The curriculum looked great on the internet, but the product I received was not all it was cracked up to be. I recalled from doing a previous internet search on unit studies that Jennifer Steward had authored a book about how to write your own unit studies. Upon returning the "Prairie Primer" to CBD, I purchased a copy of Jennifer's book to read. "Everything You Need To Know About Homeschooling Unit Studies" is really a "nuts and bolts" manual taking you step by step through the process to create your own unit study. Jennifer talks to you in an easy, conversational tone on the topics of "Choosing A Teaching Method, Get On Your Mark...Get Set...Go!, Planning Unit Studies, Books, Unit Studies and High School, and There's Still More!" The appendix includes a resource section, sample unit studies and planning sheets. Overall I am very pleased with this book. I just wish I would have discovered it sooner! Reviewed by Kim Thomas (Fishers, IN), June 03, 2008Overall, I appreciate this book's purpose; I felt the first MANY pages were very redundant, however...repeating the same things over and over just in different words. I felt it would have been best for me to just get right to the bones of how to do this, rather than reiterating how wonderful unit studies are and how they benefitted Mrs. Steward's children. Granted, I can only hope my own boys will grow up to be wonderful people, too, but I felt the early section of the book was re-hashing too many personal reflections. OVERALL, I'd recommend this...I'm new to hs'ing, but plan to incorporate many of Mrs. Steward's suggestions...its clear she knows what she's talking about and I'm all for following an expert! Reviewed by Cassie Pence (Fairborn, OH), November 23, 2007I have been reading this book and it is very very informational. I am not the creative type but the author brings so much information to light that I am now confident. The author's perspective on unit studies is very transferable. I am starting a music unit study on Monday. Write a review of Everything You Need to Know About Homeschool Unit Studies Other Customers Also PurchasedFind Related ProductsAuthor/Artist Review |
