Product DescriptionChristian values, uplifting quotes, and reminders to pray before each test are noteworthy elements of these spelling workbooks for grades 1 to 6. Phonics are emphasized throughout. A teacher's help is necessary, especially in the beginning books. Test pages are supplied at the back of each book.

8 of 8 Reviews Showing: Reviewed by Sandra Dumas (Boynton Beach, FL), January 19, 2010My son is not a struggling learner and has a lot of phonics instruction under his belt. We tried this book when he was in first, and then again in second grade. We followed all the directions and carefully studied every day. My son could not master the lists. The books in this series are not logically arranged. Before you buy, take a look at the table of Contents and samples. You will see that the lists throw in completely unrelated words, and that they are not really phonetically arranged. I like CLP but these spelling books are not a bargain. Take a look at AVKO or MCP Spelling books. Reviewed by Kira (Wisconsin), December 09, 2009Building Spelling Skills is a logically laid-out program that has worked well for us in our home-school. Along with spelling, Building Spelling Skills incorporates phonics rules, vocabulary, writing, and a brief social studies lesson into each unit. The lessons are short, just enough to hold a young child's attention, and each lesson presents a different activity which uses the words from the unit's list. Building Spelling Skills is writing-intensive and my 7 year old ran into a roadblock of frustration because he was not *quite* ready for the amount of writing required. However, after taking a detour through Explode the Code's Level One workbook, we were able to come back mid-year to Building Spelling Skills at Unit 6 with ease and success. Reviewed by Jeff Gilliam (Lexington, TN), September 28, 2009I homeschool my 6yo son in 1st & 2nd grade subjects and this is perfect for us. We didn't need an in-depth spelling program at this stage. I love this book in that it states a phonetic rule & then reinforces it with 20 spelling words & an activity per day each week. I also appreciate the scripture and other excellent quotes in the book. We are about 1/4 way through the book & it is a very good fit for us. Reviewed by Jennifer Tammeling (Colorado Springs, CO), April 28, 2009I really like this book and the exercises in it. The only thing I don't like is that there is not a separate page(s) for the teacher that lists all the words for each unit. It is necessary for the teacher to copy the lists if she wants the child to do the final tests in the back of the book, as is suggested. Reviewed by Karen Martindale (Houston, TX), December 29, 2008This is just what we wanted, for a little extra help. Easy format, fun to use, received it in 3 days! Reviewed by Anne (Birmingham, AL), October 19, 2008I usually LOVE Christian Liberty Press products but this is a disappointment. It doesn't begin at their reading or writing level. I does begin w/ simple words, but it would be more user friendly if the lessons for reading/phonics/spelling were intertwined, e.g., they study the long "O" sound in any given week, how to read it, write it and spell it. The sequence doesn't make sense to my child, or me. Reviewed by Mandy (Ontario, Canada), May 17, 2008I LOVE this spelling series! We are almost finished Book 1 and can't wait to start Book 2 in the fall. Each unit has a variety of activities and the words in each list keep my daughter challenged in her spelling. I plan to use this series all the way to Book 8. Reviewed by Claudia Teubl (Tivoli, NY), February 12, 2002I am a mother of 8 with 15 years of experience homeschooling. For children who love the challenge of spelling, this is an excellent program. Two of our children have tried and done very well with this series. They love the variety of words and the approach. However, for children who are not avid spellers, MCP's Spelling Workout is a good alternative.
